How Identification Works
Pinpointing the edition and age of a book can be a tedious process. Thankfully, the Mennonite Historical Library has been able to identify key features of various editions of the Ausbund that make identifying it easier. The process works by comparing specific pages and sections of a text in hand to already identified copies; key pages include the title page, introduciton, page 359, and the beginning sections of lieds 82 and 131. Each of these pages has unique markers that differ from edition to edition - specific fonts, different illustrative lettering, printer's markers, and formatting. By comparing texts one can methodically narrow down options until the right edition is found.
At this time, this site is only hosting twelve editions printed before 1800. Several later printings have precise dates, but many early ones can are only narrowed down to the century of printing. Over time, we hope to include images from later editions as well.
